Komatsu Mining Germany GMBH has officially approved Gearmate 1000 Heavy

Komatsu Mining Germany GMBH has officially approved Gearmate 1000 Heavy for use on the Slewing Ring Gears of all models of Komatsu machines that use a Slewing Ring in the swing system.

To obtain this approval, testing was done on 3 PC 8000 Shovels. After 4464 hours, the slew ring gear on Shovel #37 had no measurable wear. This was described by a Komatsu engineer as “Unheard of”. The average wear rate for the remaining two, when extended over 50,000 hours, comes to 0.0287” (29 thou or 0.73 mm). For comparison, normal slewgear life is about 30,000 hours.

1. Machines tested: Model PC 8000 shovels (3).
2. Gear condition at start: All 3 slew ring gears had pre-existing moderate scuffing.
3. Operation: Overburden removal.
4. Start of testing: August / September of 2009.
5. Standard duration for this test: 5000 hours. (Testing was cut short on all 3 shovels).
6. Measurement frequency: Wear rates were measured every 14 to 17 days.
7. Measurement device: Gear tooth gage manufactured by the gear OEM. The gauge fits perfectly between any 2 teeth of a newly machined ring gear. When wear occurs, the gap can be measured using feeler gauges.
8. Measurement location: The ring gear was measured, not the pinions. Readings were taken at a minimum of 3 locations.

Wear rate is expressed as: Number of hours per 0.001” of wear.
